Ballet, Nureyev and Fonteyn
Sculpture
Medium: Bronze
In 1962 I attended a performance of the Royal Ballet in Atlanta where Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn were featured, dancers. Margot did a simple arabesque and Rudolf made a grande leap and seemed to hang in the air, then reached out and tenderly touched her hand. It was electrifying and created an indelible picture in my mind. I sketched the move on my program and later created it in bronze. Bronze is the only sculpture medium such a piece could be possible. It is one of my favorite works. There is no mold. This is one of two castings made.
Dance has been a favorite subject in my art since my youth. Few sculptors have been a dancer which helps the accuracy of my figures.
I chose to create the group in impressionism because in movement you do not perceive details such as facial expressions or fingers. It is usually just a blur of movement.
The entire series of adagio ballet is cast in bronze because of its amazing tensile strength. (55,000 pounds per square inch.) It is most appealing to the collector who appreciates the dance and will bring constant pleasure from any angle or perspective.
